I recently heard a lot about cupping by Olympic athletes. Do you do it? Yes we do. Cupping has been used in our clinic with great success for the last four years.

What About Allen Letgolts Physical Therapyis the difference between you and most other physical therapists?
I do not use protocol treatment. Rather, I conduct my own thorough evaluation for the purpose of identifying the underlying causes of a muscular skeletal disorder.  Then I design individualized treatment for each patient.  I do not stop at just treating the symptom.

Who actually performs the treatment?
I, or my associate, Megan Steele, treat every patient personally.  We allocate as much time as is necessary for effective treatment.

I’ve had pain for so long. Can many problems of pain and movement be cured by physical therapy alone?
For the greatest number of my patients, the answer is yes.  That is ultimately why patients come to me – to find a long-term resolution to their pain.

So does your background in dance, martial arts and athletics help you in your work at all?
It allows me to better understand the sources and impact of pain.  Being physically active, I know how pain can affect one’s quality of life.  It’s important to understand how the patient feels, because psychology is a huge component of pain, and therefore of treatment.  Because I understand how the patient feels, I can anticipate some of the problems patients encounter in cooperating in their treatment, and following through with home exercises.  Since patient participation is essential to the outcome in what I do, cooperation and trust makes an enormous difference.

Do you find you have much success with your own personal brand of PT?
Yes. I find I get quicker, longer lasting resolutions.  I attribute the success to treating the underlying problem. Patients no longer re-injure themselves.  A good analogy is a car with a flat tire.  If you have a deflated tire, then you must always keep the wheel turned in the direction opposite the flat tire.  If you steer straight, you go off the road.   Eventually steering against the flat tire damages your steering, your suspension and other parts of your car.

It is the same with people.  If you have unbalanced movement, then you must constantly compensate by altering your other movements to maintain normal function.  When you do that, you put additional strain on muscles and joints above what they are designed to handle.  Over time, this damages those body parts.   My goal is to prevent such damage by correcting the cause of unbalanced movement and putting the body’s mechanics back into equilibrium.
